SANCTUARY: Our Sacred Place
SANCTUARY: Our Sacred Place is a HistoryMiami Museum photographic series by Woosler Delisfort exploring the relationship between individuals and faith through rituals and spiritual practice, while highlighting the impact of Eurocentric norms on African and Indigenous traditions.
As lead designer, I collaborated with the guest curator and HistoryMiami’s exhibition director to create an immersive exhibition that evokes the feeling of entering a sacred space. The entrance before the intro wall features a nondenominational, church inspired structure with a custom faux stained glass, I designed to feel familiar yet inclusive acting as an integral part of the architectural concept. The stained glass “Welcome” design pays a small homage to an archival photo of one of South Florida’s oldest Baptist churches. The choice of a multicolor palette was to symbolize inclusivity across all beliefs.
Inside the gallery, altar displays and cultural objects connect visitors to a range of spiritual practices cultivating an environment that supports the work’s narrative and encourages personal reflection.
