CAPTURE: A Portrait of the Pandemic
In 2020, Miami was profoundly impacted by the onset of COVID-19 just like the rest of the world. A city known for tourism, nightlife and cultural vibrancy became a backdrop for racial justice protests, rising homelessness and an entertainment industry in crisis.
CAPTURE: A Portrait of the Pandemic featured photographs by Rahsaan “Fly Guy” Alexander, a Miami-based DJ and photographer, documenting the city’s experience during this time. Presented by HistoryMiami Museum, the exhibition offered a visual record of Miami’s evolving reality since March 2020.
I developed the exhibition’s graphic system, including the intro wall, labels, signage, way finding, supporting graphics, take home brochures and digital/print promotional materials.
The intro wall concept centered on an abstract illustration combining a camera and a record player, representing Fly Guy’s dual identity as both photographer and DJ. The record appears fragmented, symbolizing disruption and the “broken record” of repeated crises during the pandemic. The triangular shapes are inspired by elements of the Guyanese flag in reference to the artist’s heritage and they are integrated throughout the space to add cultural context and visual continuity.
